How to Avoid Common Running Injuries

If you’re thinking about taking up running as a means of getting into better shape, you’ve made a great decision; Running is a great way not only to burn calories and achieve a healthier heart, but to improve endurance as well. Before you get started with running, however, you’ll want to know how to avoid some common running injuries.

Buy the Right Running Shoes

Start with the right running shoes; these should be snug and form-fitting while still offering the right amount of support for the arches of your feet. If you’re really serious about getting into running (especially distance running), you might even want to consider having a pair of running shoes custom fitted to avoid blistering and foot injuries. Never underestimate the importance of the right-fitting workout gear.

Stretch Before Going for a Run

Another way to avoid running injuries is to take at least five minutes to stretch out your legs, spine, and even your arms before you head out on your daily run. Failure to adequately stretch before you head out on a run can lead to pulled muscles, which can really hinder your progress.

Include a Warm-Up and Cool-Down

Finally, make sure to warm up with a brisk walk or jog before you move into full-fledged running. And when you’re done with your run, give yourself five minutes or so to walk before you stop, which will allow your body the “cool-down” time it needs to recover. This will also help to reduce your chances of a running injury.
