Choose Types of Exercise That You Can Do for Your Whole Life

Some types of exercise are difficult for even young people. They become almost impossible as you age. Any sport or type of exercise that tends to cause injuries is in this category. Football, rugby, boxing, and some other more extreme forms of martial arts come to mind. They destroy many bodies – the opposite of a fitness program

Avoid Competing Types of Exercise

Participating in fitness programs that work against each other can stall your progress. For example swimming and running tend to work against each other. They work different sets of muscles. They also require a somewhat different cadence.

If you are already in good condition and are wanting to make your fitness program more difficult, this works. But it takes a huge amount of motivation because it won’t be easy – or even moderate difficulty. It will be tough. Your progress in either one will be slower than if you specialized in one.

Avoid False Discouragement

  1. Do not continually compare yourself with those who have been working out longer, or for some other reason, have a built-in advantage over you.
  2. Don’t let somebody in better condition sucker you into a comparison. That is a false ego trip for them and discouraging for you – unless you see up front what they are doing. It is better to come out on top with somebody at or just below your level.
  3. Don’t attempt exercises you have never performed before. Get some guidance and get somebody to spot you. Your spotter can step in if things go wrong.
  4. Don’t take short cuts in form, the number of reps, the amount of weight or resistance, or other exercise you do. Cheating affects your rate of fitness improvement.
  5. Don’t pull against your friendly competitor. It is hard on your morale and moves your focus away from improvement.
  6. Don’t exercise with somebody who makes you anxious. Exercise should be done in a relaxed manner. Exercising when relaxed is also safer.

Avoid Stress and Anxiety in Your Personal Life

As just mentioned, exercising when relaxed leads to quicker improvement and is more rewarding. Eliminating stress is also better for your overall health.
