Making Variety Work for You During Your Swimming Workouts – Maintain Motivation and Interest
Swimming workouts can consist of swimming the same distance every day, non-stop. While this is good for your physical condition, it can get dull after a while. In addition, your increasing level of fitness will become static.
Your condition level plateaus if there is no variety. Instead of swimming a long distance all at once, you can break your swim up into smaller parts and multiple strokes. You can also use an assortment of swimming gear.
Break Your Swim Workout into Shorter Segments
Doing a 50 yard sprints is less monotonous and is actually more beneficial than swimming the same distance non-stop. You vary the distances of your sprints each week.
You can swim varying distances for each part of your daily activity. Swim 25 yards at full speed, then 50 yards at full speed, etc. Keep increasing your distance for each segment until you have a complete workout.
This can easily be done in reverse order as well. Put the longest swims first. If you get to the 25 yard sprint and need more laps, start increasing the distances again. You can also change the stroke you use.
Use a Variety of Swim Gear
You can also use a variety of swimming gear to isolate your workout to just your upper body or just your kick. Swimming buoys that are place between your thighs hold your lower body level while you work on your your arm stroke and body position.
Kickboards hold your upper body level with the water while you propel yourself with you kick.
Webbed gloves increase your pulling power and increase your upper body workout.
Swim fins are allowed at some pools. It often depends on whether your fins will mark the sides of the pool. Some a manufactured to leave no marks. If you use fins, remember that they increase your speed substantially. To maintain your exercise level while using fins, increase the distance you swim.
Use Multiple Strokes
All of these methods can be used with all strokes – crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.
