A winter workout can be as gratifying as a sweet summer one – but only as long as you have the right gear to keep yourself warm and comfy. Your level of comfort will depend on many factors, such as how aggressively you are exercising and how cold is it outside. Here are some good rules to help you dress for winter, regardless of whether it’s snowy or freezing cold outside.

  1. Start with a wicking bra and a wicking tank since they are made of comfy and breathable natural merino wool.

  1. Slip on wicking socks that go up to your knees to keep your calves warm. Find some made of a natural and synthetic blend that keeps your toes warm without adding too much bulk.

  1. Wear your clothes in layers. Depending on the temperature outside, you can decide to leave out the insulating middle layer. You can also choose to stick to thin moisture-wicking shirts. You can also wear a light weight zippered jacket that can be easily removed, should your body temperature rise. If it’s slightly misty or drizzling outside, you can put on a thin, waterproof windbreaker with vents to keep you dry and comfortable. When you buy jackets, choose the one with zipper pockets to stash any headgear or gloves when you warm up.

  1. You must also apply facial sunscreen and lip balm with SPF, since snow reflects the sun’s harmful UV rays. Sunglasses are also important to protect your eyes because the light bouncing off the snow can be blinding.

  1. You will need water resistant but breathable running shoes to help you make snow or rainy conditions bearable for your feet. You will easily find good running shoes at baaabfitness.com that are just made for bad winter weather. Wear gaiters over your calves to keep your ankles and legs dry for times when snow is deep.

Exercising outdoor during the winter can mean that you will have to deal with a lot of snow, ice and rain. In fact, exercising in winter has just as many challenges as exercising in extreme heat. Don’t force yourself into trying to run hard and fast in difficult weather. Should there be need, take your workout indoors or take a day off. Sometimes ice and snow coupled with dark can make for a deadly combination. It is also much safer and much more fun to train with your friend. Moreover, getting a friend to join in your workout regime will establish a sense of accountability.
