How to Overcome Inertia in Your Exercise Schedule
If you are like most people, getting into an exercise program is a big step. It is easy to say you will do it tomorrow, or when you have more time or energy. Just like in physics, inertia operates in our behavior as well. We are creatures of habit.
The Power of Habits
You perform your occupation every day because you have the habit of going to your workplace and starting at the same time every weekday. Your desk, computer, and work tools are there ready for you to use them. There is little or no preparation time before starting.
Exercise is similar. Setting a scheduled time and place works wonders in making your exercise regular. It makes it much easier for you to exercise every day without having to work up enough motivation to show up. Have your fitness apparel in a standard place so it will always be available.
Set a scheduled time, preferably the same time every day, and a scheduled place, preferably the same place every day. Creating a habit takes only a few days so that you go to your exercise location at the same time without even thinking about it.
Your Muscles and Scheduled Exercise
Your muscles are similar. If they are not used to exercise, they may mildly protest with slight soreness, stiffness, etc. However, once you settle into a routine, it becomes second nature. Your muscles are used to the workout and you go through it with much less effort. There is no soreness or stiffness.
Your body will adjust to the amount of energy that needs to be available at your exercise time. Sometimes, if you have to miss your regular exercise, your body’s energy level will seem higher than usual because it has adjusted to a higher level and needs that outlet.
When you go on vacation, try and keep up your exercise schedule. That will make it much easier to get back in your routine when you get home.
